A handbag is nowdays usually functional and designed with fashion in mind.
In American English, a handbag is called a Purse (a small bag).
Some different handbag types: Purses are generally carried by women, though men sometimes use one instead of a backpack; such a Purse is sometimes self-consciously labelled as a "murse" or "manbag". It can also be bluntly called a "man-purse".
A medium-to-small-sized bag with a short handle, designed to be carried (clutched) in one's hand is often called a Clutch. A larger Purse with two handles, is often referred to as a Tote.

Satchel: Like all bags, Satchels are easily customised with patches and various other creative textiles. No one really knows when the Satchel was invented. Some people believe that it was invented as a small purse or "carry-sack" for women in the Middle Ages.
