A handbag is nowdays usually functional and used as a fashion accessory.
In American English, a handbag is called a Purse (a small bag).
We see a lot of variety in handbags: Purses are normally carried by women, though men sometimes carry one as a smaller alternative to a backpack; such a Purse is sometimes self-consciously described as a "murse" or "manbag". It can also be bluntly called a "man-purse".
A medium-to-small-sized bag with a short handle, designed to be carried (clutched) in one's hand is often referred to as a Clutch. A larger Purse with two handles, is often called a Tote.
A Pocketbook is similar to a Purse (in the British English sense), but has space for the carrying of sheets of paper as well. Purses are also made-up of zari, sterling silver, leather, cloth etc.
A security Purse is very handy to protect other types-your valuables from travel theft. The purse has an invisible stainless steal strap sewn into the material and a protectant to cover the zip.
Other types of handbag include :
Hobo: The Hobo bag is a style of Handbag or Purse that is typically large and characterized by a crescent shape, a slouchy posture and a long strap designed to wear over the shoulder.
Satchel: The most famous use of a Satchel was in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as used by Ford Prefect, which he uses to hold his towel and other odd items.
