A handbag is nearly always functional and fashionably-designed.
In British English, a handbag is considerably larger than a Purse, which is a small money container similar to a wallet (but typically used by women) and including a compartment for coins.
We see a lot of variety in handbags: Purses are traditionally carried by women, though men sometimes use one instead of a backpack; such a Purse is sometimes self-consciously called a "murse" or "manbag". It can also be bluntly called a "man-purse".
A medium-to-small-sized bag with a short handle, designed to be carried (clutched) in one's hand is often described as a Clutch. A larger Purse with two handles, is often called a Tote.
A Pocketbook is similar to a Purse (in the British English sense), but allows the carrying of sheets of paper as well. Purses are also made-up of zari, sterling silver, leather, cloth etc.
A security Purse is made to protect types-you from travel theft. The purse contains an invisible stainless steal strap built into the cloth and a covering on the part where the zipper is.

Satchel: Like all bags, Satchels are easily customised with patches and various other creative textiles. No one really knows when the Satchel was invented. Some people believe that it was invented as a small purse or "carry-sack" for women in the Middle Ages.
