A handbag is nearly always functional and fashionably-designed.
Most commomly it is used to hold a number of items such as a wallet, keys, and tissues.
We see a lot of variety in handbags: Purses are typically used exclusively by women, though men sometimes use one instead of a backpack; such a Purse is sometimes self-consciously described as a "murse" or "manbag". It can also be bluntly called a "man-purse".
