A handbag is nowdays usually functional and designed with fashion in mind.
In American English, a handbag is called a Purse (a small bag).
There are many styles of handbags: Purses are typically worn as an accessory by ladies, though men sometimes carry one as a smaller alternative to a backpack; such a Purse is sometimes self-consciously labelled as a "murse" or "manbag". It can also be bluntly called a "man-purse".
